New Directions

I have decided to change the focus of this blog, to open it up to a wider range of interests beyond simply language learning.  I still want to learn languages at a slow burn over the course of the rest of my life, and language practice may still appear in these pages.  However, I also want to practice consistently writing and editing more complex thoughts in my native language of English, in styles other than the scientific manuscript writing I generally do.  I also want to maintain only one consistent writing space rather than having multiple blogs.  Since I have already invested many hours into writing in this blog, I have chosen to change its title and focus instead of starting from scratch.  Since I really currently have a consistent audience of one, and perhaps a small number of strangers who stumble in from Google...I think no one will really mind these changes.

Sir Ken Robinson: la creatività, la verità e la bellezza

Questo pomeriggio, abbiamo ascoltato un discorso di Sir Ken Robinson.  È un esperto nell'educazione, è stato dal Regno Unito, originariamente.  Ha parlato su come migliorare la creatività nel sistema educativo.  È stato anche molto divertente!

Tuttavia, credo che la creatività, mentre è molto importante, i classici metodi di apprendimento, per esempio memorizzazione meccanica, ripetizione e la practica sistematica sono importanti anche.  Credo che dobbiamo tutti anche avere conoscenze elementari di matematica, scienze, lettura, scrittura, storia, e le arti, insieme a coltivando la creatività.

Sotto Madison

Ora capisco perchè il bar "Sotto" a Madison si chiama "Sotto."  "Sotto" è una parola italiana.  Significa "under" o "below" in inglese.  Sotto è un bar omosessuale e si trova sottoterra in una cantina.  Quindi, "sotto" è un doppia significato.  Molto abile!

The start of our language adventure: Italian

Danielle and I have decided to embark on a plan to learn and practice multiple foreign languages.  We will learn and practice them in two to three month stretches and rotate them to keep them fresh.  First up is Italian, because there is a small chance I will be going to Bologna, Italy for a week of experiments sometime before the end of the year.  We will learn Italian until at least Halloween.  After that, um, maybe Spanish.  Then, who knows!

Cominciamo a studiare l'italiano!
